Our
Achievements
The Today Foundation is pleased with the progress we've achieved
in helping Americans from all walks of life to enjoy a higher
quality of life.
A
short list of our achievements in recent years includes:
In
the area of fighting crime:
- produced
a series of Annual Crime Reports which identified trends in
crime and criminal justice throughout the state of Texas
- conducted
a panel discussion on "Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security"
- awarded
several "Outstanding Officer" awards throughout Texas
- conducted
hearings throughout Texas on criminal justice, and provided
research to law enforcement and elected officials, that provided
the foundation for improvements to the state's criminal justice
process that state legislators later turned into law
In
the area of improving education:
- since
1994, has helped more than 5,000 educationally disadvantaged
students throughout Dallas County to go to the schools of their
choice, gain better access to technology and acquire a better
education than they would have without our support
- partnered
with the Children's Scholarship Fund, to gain matching funds
for CEF scholarships for Dallas County children
- co-sponsored
a luncheon with the SMU Cox School of Business at which former
Secretary of Education William Bennett discussed ways for reforming
the educational system in the United States
- sponsored
a luncheon at which then U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey
discussed the value of private school vouchers and opportunities
for reforming the educational system in the United States
In
the area of preventing drug use:
- established
the Texas Anti-Drug Program, which has bestowed more than 30
anti-drug awards to organizations in the state that have created
exemplary anti-drug programs
- championed
an educational program to raise awareness across the state about
the new form of heroin called "cheese"
In
the area of improving children's reading skills:
- provided
Internet-based reading systems used (in 2007) by 55,000 students
in 800 schools in 16 states
- collaborated
with U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger to develop a pilot program
with the Fort Worth Independent School District to test the
effectiveness of technology in education
In
the area of educating American about economic issues of importance
and rallying people to call for a reform of the nation's capital
gains, and estate, taxes:
- since
2001, co-produced (with Smith Barney and the Cox School of Business)
a series of Collins Economic Forums, to inform and educate the
public about American and international equity and bond markets
and trends
- in
2003, co-sponsored with SMU's Maguire Oil & Gas Institute a
Collins/SMU Energy Forum that informed the public about the
effect of higher oil prices on the American economy and solutions
to long-term energy needs
- in
1999, co-sponsored with the SMU Cox School of Business a debate
between journalists Sam Donaldson and Robert Novak titled, "Is
There a Liberal Bias in the Media?"
- co-sponsored
with the SMU Cox School of Business a private luncheon at which
Congressman Phil English of Pennsylvania discussed upcoming
tax and budget issues facing the United States government
